Overview

The CM-100 is a Substation Communication Multiplexer. It collects serial, asynchronous or synchronous data over copper or fiber (per C37.94) inputs from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED's) inside a distribution or transmission electrical power substation. The CM-100 also collects voice, analog or discrete data inputs.

The CM-100 merges the data and voice from these inputs into (1-12) DS0 (64 kbps) time slots, and outputs using a synchronous protocol on a fiber as one 2.048Mbps digital word (E1 bandwidth) or optional standard electrical T1/E1 interface utilizing 1.544/2.048Mbps. The data and voice information is separated into the appropriate outputs at the remote end of the communication network. All ports can operate either half or full duplex.

The use of standard communication protocols allows the CM-100 to interface with larger multiplexers that accept standard C37.94 (n x 64Kbps where n = 12), T1 or E1 interfaces.

The CM-100 enclosure is a 19-inch wide, 1U high, rack mountable chassis. The unit is equipped with a choice of power supplies and fiber optic heads. Programming is performed onboard utilizing the front panel keypad and display.

Applications

Protective Relaying

Since the CM-100 uses a synchronous protocol with delays consistently less than .5ms, it is ideally suited for transfer trip applications. The CM-100's hardware is substation hardened to withstand the environment required for protective relay communications. Available interface modules that are commonly used for teleprotection applications include: G.703, RS-422, C37.94 (n = 1), RS-232 and RS-485. The CM-100 also offers a discrete contact interface module that may be used for simple low voltage and distribution transfer trip schemes. The Discrete Input module can also be used as a transmit only device that will key a remote Iniven PDR-2000 digital teleprotection device.

Intra-Substation Communications

To eliminate the effects of ground rise potential on critical communications within a substation, many utilities have installed fiber optics within their substations. The CM-100 can be used to combine analog and digital signals from many devices and transport their data over a single pair of fiber optics. The CM-100 can deliver this information to a larger multiplexer in a communications enclosure using a standard C37.94 protocol.

Inter-Substation Communications

The CM-100 can be used for long haul fiber optic communications. With a variety of fiber optic heads, the CM-100 can be used for substation to substation communications. Beside the standard 850nm multimode heads, the CM-100 can also be supplied with multimode 1310nm, or single mode 1310nm or 1550nm heads with a choice of power levels. On board programming allows the unit to be configured to communicate with another CM-100 or with the use of standard C37.94, T1, and E1 protocols, directly to a larger multiplexer.

Multi-Point Communications

CM-100's can be strung together in a loop or with a CM-100H (hub), a string or star configuration. Each time slot can be programmed to receive the data, forward the data to the next unit, or receive the data and forward the data to the next unit. CM-100 data can also be sent to multiple locations using a larger multiplexer or CM-100H, allowing the same data to be received by several locations in the network.

Bit Error Correction/Detection

The CM-100 comes equipped with a optional setting for bit error correction. When this feature is turned on, the CM-100 is capable of correcting up to 21 bit errors in up to three words over three frames. It does this while maintaining latency times under 1 ms. If the bit errors should exceed the unit's ability to correct, the data is rejected. This feature can be very effective when working with devices that do not have advanced error checking or devices that may require excessive time to recover from a bit error or a series of bit errors. Receiving IED's will see only error free (that is, data that has received errors after transmission by a CM-100) data.

Modules

The CM-100 has the capacity to carry 6 interface modules in addition to the standard C37.94 Transceiver and Power Supply modules. Each of the interface modules occupy 2 of the 12 available time slots. Each module has it's own logic, and when installed, downloads it's instruction set and identification to the motherboard microprocessor. This simplifies installation and allows for the development of future interface modules that can have their own custom setting requirements.
