Overview

The PTR-1500 is a four channel audio tone teleprotection terminal used for high speed tripping in protective relaying schemes for electric power generation and transmission. The PTR-1500 can communicate over a voice grade telecommunications medium (i.e. carrier, wire line, metallic pairs and microwave) or over fiber optic lines. The PTR-1500 has been optimized for high speed, dependability and security. Single and dual channel FSK modulation techniques are used in conjunction with digital differential Guard/Trip energy sensing. The Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology used to generate transmitter frequency, establish receiver frequency discrimination and manage all channel filtering is crystal controlled. This design provides a high level of stability, which overcomes the drift with temperature and age problem encountered with analog methods. The design of the PTR-1500 allows for on-board programming without the need of an external programmer or laptop. Operating characteristics of the PTR-1500 are controlled by firmware. Parameter changes are accomplished by changing DIP switch settings. Frequencies, channel bandwidths, communications protocols and logic modes are all programmable.

Configurations

The PTR-1500 teleprotection terminal is designed as a four channel communications system that can operate in three different modes depending on how the Logic Module is programmed.

Dual Channel

Two frequencies are always generated by the Transmitter, either two Guard tones or two Trip tones. Both Trip frequencies are required in order for a Trip to be output. The use of two frequencies for Guard and Trip signals dramatically increases the security of the system.

Single Channel

One frequency is generated by the Transmitter, either a Guard or Trip tone. When the Trip tone is received the Trip is output.

Dual Independent

Two frequencies are generated by the Transmitter. The system operates as two single channel units simultaneously. When the Trip frequency is received the corresponding Trip is output. Each Trip input will operate independently of the other.

Because the PTR-1500 is a four channel unit, it can operate 2 of the above logic schemes independently in the same unit. The 2 “halves” of the unit need not be the same.

Modules

TRANSMITTER MODULE

The PTR-1500 requires one Transmitter Module (Quad-tone plus two pilot tones). The Transmitter Module performs calculations necessary to synthesize required tone frequencies and to execute required control functions.

RECEIVER MODULE

The PTR-1500 requires two Receiver Modules for Quad channel operation or one for Dual Channel operation. The Receiver Module controls tone filtering, noise detection and logic functions.

LOGIC MODULE

The PTR-1500 requires two Logic Modules for Quad channel operation or one module for Dual channel operation. The Logic Module monitors all Trip inputs, provides instructions to the Transmitter Module, analyzes the Receiver Module outputs and controls the Trip output drivers. It also controls the Status Relay Module and monitors the DC/DC Module.

LINE INTERFACE MODULE

The Line Interface Module contains power supply filters, the main power switch and PTR-1500's fuses. It also couples the communication lines using four transformers.

STATUS RELAY MODULE

The Status Relay Module contains 8 relays (2-Alarm, 2-Block, 4-Loss of Signal) and eight relay driver circuits. There are four relays per dual channel, which drive external equipment when a change in system operations status is detected.

SOLID STATE RELAY MODULE

The Solid State Relay Module contains thirteen solid state relays, twelve are used for trip (or other) functions and one is used for alarm or out of service indication. Each relay has a contact rating of 1A at 125VDC.

MULTI-TRIP I/O MODULE

The Multi-trip I/O Module Contains five Trip input optical isolators and eight solid state outputs optically isolated (4-Trip and 4-Guard).

DC/DC MODULE

The DC/DC Module contains over-voltage and under-voltage detectors that will disable the PTR-1500 Trip circuits if the supply voltage is out of limit. The module produces ±12VDC outputs.

UNIVERSAL RELAY MODULE

The Universal Relay Module contains up to four dry contact relays that can be used for Trip or Guard indications. Each relay is a form “C” relay with a contact rating of 10A at 150VDC.

HEAVY DUTY RELAY MODULE

The Heavy Duty Relay Module contains up to three mechanical relays that can be used for Trip or Guard indications. Each relay is a form “A” relay with a contact rating of 30A at 150VDC.

FIBER OPTIC DIGITIZER MODULE

The Fiber Optic Digitizer Module provides all Logic Functions. Provides CMOS output for the Fiber Optic Interface Unit.
